Cancellation of 2020 Busan Choral Festival & Competition/Composition Competition
Dear BCFC Friends,  The Board of 2020 Busan Choral Festival & Competition/Composition Competition feels very sorry to announce that we have decided to cancel this year’s event due to COVID-19 pandemic, widely spreading in the world. This decision was very hard for us and disappointed us. But we concluded that it could not be avoided when considering the safety of participants and audience, also uncertain situation for all indoor events including choir’s rehearsals, after careful consideration based on Korea government's recommendation and WHO’s information.   The Busan Choral Composition Competition warmly thanks from the bottom of its heart the more than 40 composers from all over the world who wanted to participate in our composition competition this year, but reasons beyond the capabilities of all of us did not help us in its realization no matter how hard we try. The global liquid economic situations, the health crisis, the inability to prepare are some of the reasons that led us to this decision.  As for the all submitted works for 2020 Busan Choral Composition Competition, they could be competed for 2021 Competition if participants want.   Next year, we’ll have the Busan Choral Festival & Competition from October 20th to 23rd in 2021.   Sending all best wishes during this challenging time in the world.  Best wishes,Yong-Bok DO Chairperson of 2020 Busan Choral Festival & Competition/Composition Competition

2019 Composition Competition Winners (Revised)
The Jury (the final 8 submissions)Mark Anthony Carpio (Philippines) Raul Talmar (Estonia)Tim Sharp (USA)Vytautas Miškinis (Lithuania)Young-Jo Lee (South Korea)  2019 Composition Competition Winners 1st Place: Mark Raeniel Agpasa (Philippines) "Jubilate Deo"2nd Place: Carlos Cordero (Venezuela) "Tota Pulchra es, Maria" 3rd Place: Guilherme Hollanda-Azevedo (Brazil) "Ocean of Illusions"  Brief assessment of a president of the Jury, Young-Jo Lee 2019 Finalists' compositions seem dominated by harm onic progressions favoring texture and color over linear counterpoint among voices. Perhaps a few more passages giving prominence to contrapuntal techniques and conversations between voices would have added variety and balance. Ultimately, the composers’ creations were well appreciated for their contemplative qualities. Thank you for all the hard works both participants and juries.    We have got 60 works of 56 applications from 29 countries this year. We highly appreciate their brilliant works which were impressive enough to touch the jury. However, as the Busan Composition Competition much prefers artistically higher quality songs, so the judgement focused on it.  All winners of the 1,2,3 places are invited to join the 2019 Busan Choral Festival & Competition and will receive their Diplomas during an Award Ceremony on Saturday, October 19, 2019.  The Prize Money will be sent to their bank account within 2 weeks after finishing the BCFC.  The first prize winner's work will be performed on OCT 19th, 2019.  As a member of the 2019 BCFC, they will be entitled to participate in all the Festival activities including the Choral Competition, Choral Workshops and additional performances. If there is any winner who cannot join the Festival, the BCFC committee will mail the Diploma via First Class Mail to the address provided in the Application Form.  Congratulations!

2018 Composition Competition Winners
The Jury (the final 10 submissions)Anton Armstrong (USA)Javier Busto (Spain)Vytautas Miškinis (Lithuania)Young-Jo Lee (South Korea)  2018 Composition Competition Winners 1st Place: Michał Ziółkowski (Poland) "The Tree of Song"2nd Place: Daniele Di Virgilio (Italy) "Frater, ave atque vale"3rd Place: Sabelo Mthembu (South Africa) "Alleluia Azania"  Brief assessment of a president of the Jury, Young-Jo Lee I am particularly delighted that there are some high quality works this year compared to last year which shows Busan Composition Competition plays a huge role in development of the World Choral Music. All works have a range of texts, strong personality and remarkable harmony which leads to modern sound effects. I feel sorry about the lack of voice role as they are devoted to the color of sound which leads to a stagnant melody and it also causes the lack of the beauty of balance in a through construct as the lyrics define musical structure in choral music. However, I have found that there are some works which show deeply artistic thought this year as well.I define the music is full of meaningful sounds. I assure that all works of this year already reached the higher level and trust to meet more meaning sounds in the future in this competition.  We have got 74 works of 65 applications from 29 countries this year. We highly appreciate their brilliant works which were impressive enough to touch the jury. However, as the Busan Composition Competition much prefers artistically higher quality songs, so the judgement focused on it.  All winners of the 1,2,3 places are invited to join the 2018 Busan Choral Festival & Competition and will receive their Diplomas during an Award Ceremony on Saturday, October 20, 2018.  The Prize Money will be sent to their bank account within 2 weeks after finishing the BCFC.  The first prize winner's work will be performed on OCT 20th, 2018.  As a member of the 2018 BCFC, they will be entitled to participate in all the Festival activities including the Choral Competition, Choral Workshops and additional performances. If there is any winner who cannot join the Festival, the BCFC committee will mail the Diploma via First Class Mail to the address provided in the Application Form.  Congratulations!
